ILOILO City – A resident was killed at a cockpit on Q. Abeto Street, Mandurriao district.

Jonny Navigar, 44, of Barangay Pali-Benedicto was stabbed on the chest. He was declared “dead on arrival” at the Western Visayas Medical Center.

Police identified the suspect as Jonelo Naelga, 41, a native of Isabela, Negros Occidental temporarily residing in Barangay Nanota Extension, Miag-ao, Iloilo. He was arrested.

A heated argument between Navigar and Naelga, who were both drunk, led to the stabbing around 11 p.m. on Sept. 3, a police report showed.

Police said the suspect used a 6.5-inch knife.

Dr. John Rowen Aguenido, who proclaimed Navigar dead at around 11:45 p.m., suspected the knife reached the victim’s heart, police said.

According to Naelga, their argument stemmed from a cockfight bet.

He claimed that Navigar struck him with an empty liquor bottle. Navigar missed at first but hit Naelga on the head and left arm in his next attempt, prompting the latter to retaliate, the suspect said.

“I regret what I did. I didn’t expect I’d be able to stab him. I was targeting his hand,” Naelga said in Hiligaynon from his cell at the Mandurriao police station.

Two people witnessed the crime – Navigar’s brother Steven, 37, and Barangay Oñate De Leon resident Francisco Juanillo, 38 – police said./PN
