GUIMARAS – Three major festivals in Western Visayas and Negros Island Region are set to perform in this year’s Manggahan Festival.
Dinagyang of Iloilo City, Ati-Atihan of Kalibo, Aklan, and MassKara of Bacolod City will grace the Western Visayas Invitational Cultural Presentation on May 21, confirmed Liberty Ferrer, officer-in-charge of the Provincial Tourism Office.
They will perform in three staging areas: Jordan Food Terminal Market, Rotonda and Food Court Area, all in Barangay San Miguel, Jordan town.
Guimaras’ Hubon Binagtong sa Manggahan, second placer in the 2017 Aliwan Fiesta street-dancing competition and champion in the 2017 Kasadyahan competition during Dinagyang, will also perform.
The event is in line with the province’s celebration of its 25th founding anniversary on May 22.
Ati-Atihan and Dinagyang are celebrated every third week of January, both in honor of the Santo Niño, or Child Jesus.
Ati-Atihan is known for street merrymaking, where revelers join the street dancers after a mass.
Dinagyang, on the other hand, is popular for artistically choreographed performances of “tribes and warriors” during the ati tribes competition.
Cultural festivities of other towns and cities also perform in the Kasadyahan competition.
Meanwhile MassKara is distinct with the decorated masks worn by street and “arena” (usually the Bacolod public plaza) performers.
The provincial government has stepped up tourism promotion in the past years, Ferrer said.
It aims to show the world “how beautiful Guimaras is … not only to showcase Guimaras’ mangoes but also our beautiful destinations like beaches and, of course, the hospitality of Guimarasnons,” she said.
Manggahan Festival and the island province’s anniversary celebration will start May 11 and run through the 22nd.
Manggahan sa Kabanwahanan, or the celebration of Manggahan in the five towns of Guimaras — Jordan, Buenavista, San Lorenzo, Sibunag, and Nueva Valencia — started in March. (PNA)
