MANILA ā€“ A court ordered the rearrest of Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) leaders Benito Tiamzon and wife Wilma after the breakdown of peace talks between the government and the left.

In a Jan. 11 decision, the Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 32 granted the Department of Justiceā€™s motion for the cancellation of the coupleā€™s bail and issued a warrant of arrest against them.

The Tiamzons and another rebel, Adelberto Silva, were on trial for murder in connection with the discovery of a mass grave in Leyte, where 15 alleged victims of the communist rebel purge in the 1980s were buried.

They were released from detention upon governmentā€™s request in 2016 as they were tapped as consultants in peace negotiations between the government and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines.

Benito Tiamzon was identified as CPP-New Peopleā€™s Army chairman and his wife as secretary-general.

On Dec. 13 last year the Tiamzons and Silva filed a joint comment before the Manila RTC Branch 32 urging the court to deny governmentā€™s plea to take them back into custody.

They said the Department of Justice failed to submit to court a formal notice of the termination of the peace talks. (ABS-CBN News)
