MANILA – Marinerong Pilipino Skippers wasted a lead as high as 17 points before hanging on to a 94-92 win over Zark’s Burger-Lyceum Jawbreakers in the 2018 PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Henri Lorenzo Subido led the way with 20 points on Thursday night while Rian Ayonayon chipped in with 15 markers.
The Skippers is being tipped as one of the favored teams this season after having numerous additions during the offseason.
Gabriel Banal had double-double 14 points and 14 rebounds. Philip Paredes also had 14 markers, with 12 coming in the opening half, while Ilonggo Billy Ray Robles contributed 10 points.
Trailing at the end of the first quarter, the Skippers were engaged in a tight battle in the second quarter before unloading a huge 12-0 run, mostly on inside baskets by Paredes, for a 47-34 halftime lead.
The Skippers went on to build its largest lead at 56-39 in the third quarter with contributions from rookies Alvin Pasaol and Abu Tratter but the Jawbreakers countered with a huge run to come to as close as 85-87.
The Jawbreakers, however, was not able to complete the turnaround after missing its three-point tries before the Skippers sealed the victory on free throws by Ayonayon and Subido.
“This win means nothing. We need to keep on working get better every day because everybody will now prepare for us,” said Skippers head coach Koy Banal. “We do not want to be pressured with the team-to-beat tag.”
Jaycee Marcelino led the way with 20 points, while NCAA MVP awardee Jaymar Perez and Mike Harry Nzeusseu added 19 and 18 markers, respectively, for the Jawbreakers./PN
