ILOILO City – Yesterday’s protests in key Western Visayas areas marking the 45th anniversary of the declaration of martial law was peaceful, according to the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6).
“The rallies ended with no untoward incidents,” said Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, regional police spokesperson.
In this city, activists gathered on Bonifacio Drive in front of the Iloilo provincial capitol for a commemorative program then marched downtown.
Gorero said the PRO-6 was thankful that everybody observed the rule of law.
President Rodrigo Duterte declared yesterday a “national day of protest” but urged rallyists “to act within the bounds of the law, maintain a peaceful conduct of rallies, marches and demonstrations.”
He also warned them of “possible infiltrators who may instigate violence in an effort to provoke the police and other law enforcement authorities.”
The Iloilo City Police Office mobilized “hundreds” of policemen yesterday.
Senior Inspector Shella Mae Sangrines, spokesperson, said the city police was thankful the day ended “really peaceful.”
“Let us move forward in making the region the best place to live, work and do business with the active support of the citizenry,” said Gorero./PN
