MassKara and beyond

BACOLOD City’s MassKara Festival, with its vibrant colors, music and dance, is an embodiment of hope, resilience and the unyielding spirit of its people. As a festival where everyone wears a mask adorned with smiling faces, it is symbolic of the community’s joyful yearning for the brighter side of life amid challenges and difficulties.

However, beneath this jovial veneer exists a grim reality – the specter of illegal drugs.

The recent seizure of P20.5 million worth of suspected shabu by the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) serves as a somber reminder of this enduring challenge. This was not just another operation; it was the largest single-operation haul in Western Visayas this year. The arrest in this police antidrug operation of a recurring figure in the drug trade underscores the relentless nature of this battle.

Yet, the commitment of the BCPO and other related units to cleanse Bacolod City of this menace is commendable. Their intensified efforts to ensure a secure and drug-free MassKara Festival 2023 celebration signals that they are not just fighting the drug trade but also working to protect the city’s traditions, its festivals, and most importantly, its future.

Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez’s gesture of rewarding the BCPO is not only a testament to the value placed on their courageous efforts but also a signal to other police units about the importance of their roles. It’s a clear message: those who protect the sanctity of our communities will be recognized and rewarded.

However, as much as we laud these efforts, it’s essential to ask the pressing question: What can be done to prevent drug traffickers from re-entering the drug trade even after arrests? This is a matter that extends beyond mere law enforcement.

Addressing the drug problem in Bacolod City and elsewhere requires a holistic approach. While law enforcement plays a vital role, we must also address the socioeconomic factors that drive individuals toward drug trafficking and abuse. Rehabilitation, community outreach, education, and economic opportunities are all key components of a comprehensive anti-drug strategy.

As the MassKara Festival peaks, let it serve as a reflection of Bacolod City’s dual challenge. On one side, the festival stands for joy, unity, and cultural pride. On the other, it reminds us of the constant battles being fought behind those smiling masks. Let us celebrate the festival with awareness, gratitude and hope – for a brighter, drug-free future for Bacolod City.
