BORACAY – A Maute family in this island resort was against the attacks of the Maute group in Marawi City and promised to cooperate with the Aklan Police Provincial Office.
The family recently went to the Boracay Tourist Assistance Center to clarify that they were not connected with the Mautes staging armed clashes with government troops, said Senior Police Officer 1 Nida Gregas-Lachica, provincial police information officer.
“The family has been living in Boracay as traders for the past eight years,” Gregas-Lachica said on Thursday.
The Maute group, reportedly comprising family members and relatives, has pledged allegiance with the Islamic State.
Some Maute families in Manila and other parts of the country have been questioned for their possible connection with the local extremists.
Meanwhile Gregas-Lachica said four families from Marawi City have evacuated to Aklan.
“They arrived in Barangay Aquino, Ibajay (town) on May 28 around 11 p.m. They had relatives there,” she said. “The provincial and municipal offices of the Department of Social Welfare and Development have provided them assistance.”
It was learned that the head of one of the evacuating Marawi families works for the Commission on Audit.
“Two of the four families will be going back to Iligan City this weekend,” Gregas-Lachica said. “The two others were planning to stay in [Aklan] for good.”
