ILOILO City – Mayor Jose Espinosa III appealed to customers at bars and other entertainment establishments to stay temperate to avoid getting into altercations and fights.
Espinosa was reacting to the fatal shooting of Remier Tan, a 24-year-old resident of Lawaan Village in Jaro, at Smallville on Sunday.
Initial police investigation showed Tan had an argument with the suspect – 22-year-old Vanlen Jyro Joseph Hulleza, 22, of Barangay Sambag, Jaro – at a bar before the incident.
“Kon pwede ka kapasensya, pasensyahi gid, indi magpadala sa kainit para makalikaw kita sa amo na nga sitwasyon,” Espinosa said yesterday.
Moreover, security at the entertainment complex must be tightened, the mayor said.
Police visibility is important, especially when bars and restaurants are closing, he said.
The shooting happened at around 5:30 a.m. “Inugpuli na ina kay kalabanan sina [nga establishments] sirado na,” said Espinosa.
According to the mayor, there should be more police officers patrolling Smallville.
Police officers patrolling a few meters from the crime scene at the time responded, according to Senior Superintendent Henry Biñas, city police head.
Stationary officers are detailed at Smallville until around 2 a.m. to 3 a.m., when several patrol officers would take over, Biñas said. He said he instructed the standby officers to extend their stay until 6 a.m.
Espinosa floated the idea of having Smallville establishments closed by 3 a.m. to 4 a.m. He said the local government will review regulations governing the operation of businesses at the complex.
