ILOILO City – A homicide charge was filed yesterday against a suspect in the fatal stabbing of a vegetable vendor at the public market in Leganes, Iloilo.
Celso Villaruel Tedios, 36, of Barangay Guinobatan, Leganes was detained at the municipal police station.
Tedios, also a vegetable vendor, turned himself in and confessed to the crime after the incident at around 2 p.m. on Dec. 2. He brought with him a bloodstained 17-inch knife, which the police identified as the weapon.
The victim – 57-year-old Nestor Sencil Sabando of Barangay San Vicente, Leganes – sustained stab wounds on the left side of the body and the shoulder.
Tedios insisted that what he did was self-defense.
A heated argument over display tables led the two vendors to challenge each other to a fight, a police report showed.
Tedios claimed Sabando was already wielding a 14-inch knife. He said he charged at Sabando for fear that the latter would get to him first.
“Gin-unahan ko lang sia,” the suspect told Panay News. “Nakita ko na nga daan may kutsilyo sia nga dala.”
Sabando was taken to the West Visayas State University Medical Center in Jaro district where he was pronounced dead at around 2:18 p.m./PN
