KALIBO, Aklan – A “hired killer” is seen as the suspect in shooting an executive official of the Technical Educations Skills Development Authority (TESDA) in Negros Occidental on Dec. 7, according to one of the victim’s family members.
Dr. Julius Jamero, the new provincial director of TESDA in Negros Occidental, was on board an Isuzu Crosswind in Talisay City when attacked around 6:30 p.m. that day. He sustained six gunshot wounds, police said.
“We were told by the police investigators that the suspect may have been a hired killer,” the family member – who requested anonymity – told Panay News.
Earlier, Superintendent Adonis Rosales, chief of the Talisay City police station, ordered his personnel to investigate in Aklan where Jamero was previously assigned before being transferred to Negros Occidental in September last year.
Police said the lone gunman used a .45-caliber pistol in shooting Jamero. The shots were fired in “grouping formation,” which indicates that the shooter was adept at hitting targets, they added.
The family member said the gunman was a retired Army soldier who later became a rebel.
The gunman was “wearing a cap and a jacket, middle-aged and dark skinned,” the family member added.
It was not immediately clear if who hired the suspect but the family member said prior to the shooting, Jamero had received death threats.
The threats demanded him to stop “cleansing” the irregularities at the TESDA-Negros Occidental office.
In 2016, a still unidentified suspect also shot to death another TESDA official – Elias Redel – for his “being vocal” against the irregularities at the TESDA-Negros Occidental office.
Talisay City police have yet to issue the results of their investigation.
After his treatment at the hospital, Jamero has been given a six-month recuperation leave. He was currently recovering at an undisclosed place.
TESDA has earlier denounced the shooting incident.
TESDA director general Guiling “Gene” Mamondiong said, “TESDA is outraged and strongly condemns the shooting and wounding of Julius Jamero, our provincial director in Negros Occidental. “This cannot be ignored. We call for prompt investigations to ensure that the suspects are captured and punished.”
The Sangguniang Panlungsod of this capital city also passed a resolution condemning “in strongest terms” the attempt to kill Jamero./PN
