BACOLOD City – Despite the bad weather, thousands of people have come to the Bacolod City Government Center for the New Year’s Eve countdown dubbed as “31 in 1.”

The exact number of people who joined the year-end affair has yet to be determined but event organizer Israel Salanga estimated there were more than 1,000.

It had a higher attendance than in 2016-2017, Salanga said.

He added that people came to see the fireworks display, which welcomed the New Year in this capital city.

For his part, Mayor Evelio Leonardia said he was thankful that despite the bad weather, many had still attended the countdown.

Leonardia hopes for more attendance in the next New Year countdown, especially that Executive Order 28 is now in place.

President Rodrigo Duterte signed the EO to regulate and control the use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices across the country.

The EO limits the use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices to community fireworks display in designated “firecracker zones.”

Leonardia said Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran and the members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod are supporting the idea of institutionalizing the year-end countdown, like the MassKara and Bacolaodiat festivals./PN
