ILOILO City – The Department of Agriculture (DA) – Western Visayas has introduced a Mobile Veterinary and Molecular Laboratory to provide faster and more accessible diagnostic services to livestock and poultry raisers in the region.
Regional Executive Director Dennis R. Arpia said the mobile lab is equipped to identify various emerging animal infections, including Nipah Virus, Japanese Encephalitis, Tuberculosis, Swine Flu, and Monkey Pox.
It features advanced Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) testing capabilities, which are expected to significantly enhance the region’s animal health monitoring and disease control efforts.
Operated by personnel from the DA’s Regional Animal Diagnostic and Disease Laboratory (RADDL), the mobile unit aims to intensify specimen collection, ensure proper handling, and strengthen cooperation with partner local government units.
“This will be a game-changer in the agricultural sector, offering farmers easy access to essential services without the need for extensive travel, as the vehicle can reach remote areas,” a DA Region 6 statement explained.
Zarlina Cuello, the regional technical director for research and regulations at DA-6, emphasized the mobile lab’s crucial role in safeguarding animal health, mitigating infectious diseases, and promoting sustainable practices among stakeholders./PN
