ROXAS City – Singer, stage and movie actress Monique Wilson joined a rally in front of the Capiz provincial capitol and demanded for an end to violence against women and mining in the province.
Wilson, who shot to international prominence after essaying the role of Kim as the alternate of Lea Salonga in the West End musical Miss Saigon in the late 1980s and early 1990s, graced the Gabriela women’s organization’s launching of “Revolution” – campaign against violence on women and children.
“Revolution” is this year’s theme for Gabriela’s women’s empowerment advocacy dubbed “1 Billion Raising.”
On Jan. 25, a short program of dances and speeches condemning violence against women and children were staged.
Wilson criticized the provincial government’s lifting of a 50-year mining moratorium in Capiz. She said this showed a government that does not care about the welfare of its people.
“If mining pushes through, the province’s economic base, agriculture and aquaculture, will be affected first,” said Wilson. “Many of our mothers will be burden for the survival and economic needs of their children.”
Wilson believed only a few families will benefit from mining and most of the people will suffer from adverse ecological consequences.
Hundreds of activists, environmentalists and members of cause-oriented groups like Bagong Alyansang Makabayan, Kadamay and Buylog Capiz supported the “Revolution” campaign./PN
