KALIBO, Aklan – Aklanons and tourists may look forward to more local and international events in the province in 2017.
Aside from this capital town, six other towns are holding their respective versions of the Ati-Atihan Festival in January.
Malinao will celebrate theirs on Jan. 13.
The Makato Santo Niño Festival and the Batan Ati-Atihan Malakara Festival will be on Jan. 15, while the Ibajay Ati Municipal and Devotional Fiesta and the Altavas Santo Niño Festival will be on Jan. 21 to 22.
The world-famous Boracay Island will have its own Ati-Atihan celebration on the second week of January.
The Kalibo Ati-Atihan, dubbed the “mother of all Philippine festivals,” is the most popular version. Set from Jan. 6 to 15, it is highlighted by the traditional sadsad, drum-beating and street-dancing.
Aside from these, the Department of Tourism considers Boracay and other tourist spots as venues for the pre-pageant events of the Miss Universe, whose coronation night will be held Jan. 30 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The island resort will also host Asean ministerial meetings from Feb. 11 to March 2.
Now the local police are busy preparing for all these activities.
All the seven towns set to hold Ati-Atihan have presented their security plans at Camp Pastor Martelino Monday, Dec. 5.
The Aklan Police Provincial Office has yet to determine if there is a need for augmentation forces, according to Superintendent Pedro Enriquez, deputy provincial police director.
Soldiers, firefighters and other law enforcers will also be tapped to secure the local and international events. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
