ILOILO City – Some 20 lighted sailboats are expected to add color to the 2017 Iloilo Paraw Regatta Festival from Feb. 12 to 19.
Organizers hope to increase the six lighted sailboats they started with last year as shipping companies committed to take part in the festival.
“Everybody is excited,” said Dr. Ronald Raymond L. Sebastian, president of the Iloilo Paraw Regatta Foundation.
The lighted paraw will be sailing right in front of Tatoy’s Manokan in Arevalo district on the evening of Feb. 19.
In the morning, some 90 paraw are expected to join the race to conquer the more than 20-kilometer course from the same restaurant, passing by Jordan town in Guimaras province, and then back.
Paraw Regatta is now on its 45th year. This year’s edition has the theme, “Showcasing the Philippines as a Maritime Nation.”
Sebastian said Iloilo has greatly contributed the international seafaring industry in terms of manpower.
John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University alone produces 1,500 to 1,800 seafarers every year, he said.
Meanwhile, to assist future seafarers, organizers will also hold a one-day job fair, said Sebastian. (PNA)
