ILOILO City – Majority of the victims of firecracker blasts in Western Visayas during the holidays belonged to the age groups 11 to 15 years old (18 cases) and 20 years old above (18 cases), according to the Department of Health (DOH) Region 6.
Data from DOH-6 showed 58 persons were injured, based on the Online National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (ONEISS) Aksyon Paputok Injury Reduction (APIR) for the period Dec. 21, 2017 to Jan. 2, 2018.
A total of 16 injured persons were aged between six to 10 years old; three were between 16 to 20 years old; and the remaining three were five years old and below.
The 58 firecracker blast bases were 44.76 percent lower compared to the 105 cases during the December 2016 – January 2017 holiday celebrations.
The province of Negros Occidental recorded the most number of firecracker injuries with 33 (57 percent of the injuries reported in the whole region).
It was followed by Iloilo province with 11; Aklan with nine; Capiz, two; Guimaras, two; and Iloilo City with one case.
No report of firecracker-related injuries was recorded in the province of Antique thru ONEISS.
DOH-6 attributed the significant decrease in the number firecracker-related injuries to Executive Order (EO) 28 issued by President Rodrigo Duterte; it regulated the use of fireworks and firecrackers.
Dr. May Ann Sta. Lucia, DOH-6 Violence and Injury Prevention Program regional coordinator, said, “EO 28 with its IRR (Implementing Rules and Regulations) helped a lot in prohibiting the use of firecrackers in residential and densely populated areas.”
She also cited the political will of the local chief executives here and the partnership with agencies particularly the Philippine National Police in implementing the executive order. (PIA-Iloilo/PN)
