ILOILO City – The new battalion that the Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) is forming will be based in Camp Monteclaro in Miag-ao, Iloilo.
Camp Monteclaro used to host the Army’s 82nd Infantry Battalion (82IB) that was deployed to Marawi City in June last year.
The new battalion will be called the 93rd Infantry Battalion, said Captain Eduardo Precisio, spokesperson of the 3ID.
It will have around 500 soldiers, he revealed.
On June 16, 526 soldiers of the 82IB led by battalion commander Lieutenant Colonel Vener Morga were sent to Marawi City to augment government forces fighting the Maute terrorist group.
After they came back from Marawi, the 526 soldiers of the 82IB were distributed to several battalions in Western Visayas.
Precioso said the 3ID was in the process of selecting noncommissioned officers who would form the backbone of the new battalion.
Officers to be selected would include sergeant majors, sergeants, battalion staff officers down to platoon sergeants, squad leaders and fire team leaders.
“Our new soldiers will be mobilized as soon as they have finished training,” said Precioso.
Secretary Eduardo Año of the Department of the Interior and Local Government previously announced the plan to activate a new battalion in Panay Island in 2018 to go after the New People’s Army.
The goal to is to end the insurgency in Panay before 2018 is over, he stressed.
He urged rebels to better surrender peacefully. The government has a reintegration program that includes housing and livelihood, he said.
President Rodrigo Duterte decided to stop the peace negotiations because the rebels’ offensive operations have not ceased.
“Paano tayo makapag-usap if patuloy ang kanilang paninira at pagsusunog ng mga equipment,” said Año. “What our President wants is a ceasefire.”/PN
