Motorcyclist found dead in Calinog rice field

ILOILO — A 39-year-old motorcycle driver who figured in a road accident late Saturday night, June 6, was found dead in a rice field the following morning in Barangay Barrio, Calinog, Iloilo.

Local residents reported hearing a loud thud around 10 p.m. Suspecting a vehicular accident, several residents stepped outside their homes to check the main road but found no signs of a collision.

According to Police Captain Melvin Mercado, officer-in-charge of the Calinog Municipal Police Station, the incident was only reported at around 7 a.m. on Sunday, June 7, after passersby discovered the victim.

The driver, identified by his alias “Elbert,” 39, a native of Batangas, had plunged into a rice field located around two meters below the road level.

The victim’s wife has since arrived at the funeral home to claim his remains.

According to an Aksyon Radyo Iloilo report, the wife told the police that Elbert had been drinking alone on Saturday evening. Despite being heavily intoxicated, he insisted on driving all the way to Pototan town to visit his mother.

Authorities confirmed that the victim was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Police investigation concluded that he died on impact due to severe head injuries sustained from the fall./PN
