MANILA – Members of House of Representatives yesterday dared Bureau of Customs commissioner Nicanor Faeldon to identify the politicians trying to meddle with the Customs promotion board.
“Could (Faeldon) be more specific who these congressmen who have recommended people to the Bureau of Customs and [become] impediments to the reform that you want to introduce are?” said Deputy Speaker Fredenil Castro of Capiz province.
“It is better for Faeldon to identify them so that all those who have not recommended anyone could be spared from your general statement,” the representative said. “Hindi naman lahat kami may ganyang gawain.”
Danilo Suarez of Quezon also wanted Faeldon to name the politicians he was alluding to. He said he wants to avoid a sweeping generalization.
“I heard that if he would be pushed to the brink, he will name congressmen asking favors for some shipment, so I dare him: name them,” Suarez said in a statement. “Kung sino man iyon e tungkulin ng House na i-disiplina.”
In a news conference on Wednesday, Faeldon lashed back at the lawmakers, saying the investigation into him could be the latter’s response for denying their lobbies for promotion.
“You know that the request is a form of corruption, tapos magagalit pa kayo. My God, shame on you!” said Faeldon.
“Stop it. This is not your property. This is the country’s Bureau of Customs. So don’t act like you own this. This is not your private property,” the commissioner said.
“I do not want to humiliate anybody. We are all workers in government, but I am appealing to them: Stop it, because it doesn’t do anything good to this country,” he added. “This is a very corrupt bureau, and they are making it more corrupt. Please, stop it.”
Faeldon’s chief of staff, lawyer Mandy Anderson, said in an interview that House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez had lobbied for the promotion of an individual deemed unqualified for a job at the bureau./PN
