MANILA – Minority senators are against the postponement of the barangay election in October, their leader Franklin Drilon said.
President Rodrigo Duterte has called for the postponement of the polls for fear that drug money will influence the electoral exercise.
“The (Senate) minority is against it. We want the election to take place,” the senator from Iloilo City said on Tuesday.
Other members of the minority bloc are senators Paolo Benigno Aquino IV, Francis Pangilinan, Risa Hontiveros, Leila de Lima, and Antonio Trillanes IV.
“It’s a good policy to regularly renew your mandate. That’s the essence of a democracy,” stressed Drilon.
In 2016, Duterte signed into law a measure postponing the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections scheduled for Oct. 31 that year./PN
