MANILA – San Beda University Red Lions survived a tough stand by the Mapua University Cardinals to pull off a 69-60 win in NCAA Season 95 men’s basketball at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.
Calvin Oftana tallied double-double 24 points and 12 rebounds. Donald Tankoua flirted with triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists.
James Canlas also had 10 markers for the Red Lions (9-0).
The Red Lions, however, struggled heavily in the match. It committed 17 turnovers allowing the Cardinals to keep within striking distance before tightening its defense down the stretch to pull off the victory.
“It’s really a lesson for everyone, especially for my players in San Beda. You really have to prepare for every game. Don’t underestimate any of the teams,” said Red Lions head coach Boyet Fernandez.
He added: “I hope it’s a wakeup call for my players. This season is not gonna be easy. We made some stops in the end but we have to take good care of the basketball. We still have so many things to do.”

Paolo Hernandez carried the Cardinals (3-6) with 16 points on a 4-of-8 shooting from deep, to go with four rebounds and three assists, while Noah Lugo chipped in 13 markers.
Meanwhile, San Sebastian College Stags cruised to its fourth consecutive win. It took down Arellano University Chiefs, 85-79.
Allyn Bulanadi fired 22 points on a 5-of-10 shooting from deep for the 6-3 Stags.
In the other match, Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights leaned on the exploits of Jerrick Balanza as it defeated the College of St. Benilde Blazers, 88-64. Balanza finished with 26 points./PN
