MANILA – Bea Tan and Anthony Arbasto of Team Fire and Ice bested their foes to capture the 2016 Beach Volleyball Republic (BVR) King and Queen in the Sands crowns on Sunday at the SM Sands by the Bay in Pasay City.
The Negros Occidental-native Tan and Arbasto claimed the championship in the two-day event after scoring a 21-16, 14-21, 15-10 win over the Team Hugs of Charo Soriano and Ian Yee.
After losing the second set, the Tan-Arbasto duo adjusted their attacks with effective 1-2 plays in the third set. Arbasto made his presence felt with his strong kills at the net to take an early 4-1 lead in the deciding frame.
Soriano and Yee, however, slowly recovered as they were able to come to within 10-12, but Tan and Arbasto took advantage of their opponent’s miscues to clinch the crown.
Tan and Arbasto reached the finals after scoring a 21-18, 21-14 win over the pair of Negrense Mary Jolyn Ebro and James Natividad, while Soriano and Yee eliminated Angelique Gervacio and Bryan Bagunas, 18-21, 21-16, 15-9
Meanwhile, the tandem of Gervacio and Bagunas was able to salvage a third place finish after defeating Ebro and Natividad in the tightly-contested bronze medal match.
The BVR aims for the development and growth of beach volleyball in the Philippines. It has organized beach volleyball tournaments in different beaches and public places in the Philippines as a grassroots development program for young and aspiring players./PN
