MANILA – Filipino boxer Aston Palicte made an impressive US debut as he scored a split decision victory over American Oscar Cantu on Sunday morning at the Downtown Las Vegas Event Center in Nevada.
With the win, Palicte took home the vacant World Boxing Association-North American Boxing Association (WBO-NABA) belt, as well as the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Inter-Continental and North American Boxing Federation (NABF) super flyweight title.
This marks the second title match win of the Bago City, Negros Occidental-native Palicte this year after winning the International Boxing Federation (IBF) Pan Pacific super flyweight title against Vergilio Silvano last June in Taguig City.
Palicte quickly made his presence felt with multiple combinations against Cantu but the American boxer responded with his own hits as he nearly floored the Filipino boxer several times.
Palicte, who recently signed with Roy Jones Jr. Promotions, regained his strength in the latter rounds, surviving the game Cantu to escape with a 94-96, 98-92, 96-94 split decision victory.
With the win, the 25-year-old Palicte improved his boxing slate to 22-2-0 win-loss-draw, including 18 stoppage wins, while Cantu’s record slid down to 14-1-0 with one knockout win.
Like Palicte, Filipino boxer Jonas Sultan also made an impressive fight abroad as he won the IBF Inter-Continental super flyweight belt with a second round knockout over South African Makazole Tete on Saturday in South Africa.
The victories of Palicte and Sultan made up for the misfortunes suffered by three Filipino boxers – Negrense Roldan Aldea, Ardie Boyose and Adones Aguelo – who lost their title matches in Russia on early Sunday./PN
