MANILA – The Lyceum of the Philippines University Lady Pirates scored a clinical 25-16, 25-21, 25-12 win over the Mapua Institute of Technology Lady Cardinals in the NCAA Season 92 women’s volleyball tournament at the San Juan Arena.
Cherilyn Sindayen led the way with 18 points, on 14 attacks, three service aces and a block, for the Lady Pirates, which tied with the Arellano University Lady Chiefs at 5-1 win-loss.
Czarina Orros added eight markers while Cherry Genova and Christine Miralles combined 14 points for the Intramuros-based squad, which came from a huge upset over defending champion College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers last week.
The Lady Pirates was so dominant that it led in all departments: 36 to 20 in spikes, 3-0 in blocks and 12-4 in service aces. The match only became close in the second set.
“Hindi pa rin kami satisfied sa ginagalaw nila kasi alam ko na kaya pa nilang umangat,” said Lady Pirates mentor Emil Lontoc. “Ang sinasabi ko nga sa kanila kahit sinong team dito kaya naming talunin kapag gumanda ang laro namin at nag-peak na kami.”
The Lady Pirates will resume action on Jan. 4 after the long holiday break but Sindayen said they will use the oppurtunity to hone their skills better in preparation for the Final Four round.
“Actually, wala po kaming break. Siguro po Dec. 24 at 25 lang, by 26 balik po kami agad kasi kailangan naming mag-double time para mapabuti pa laro namin,” said Sindayen.
Dianne Latayan and Angeline Manungdayao finished with five points each to lead the Lady Cardinals, which slid down to last place in the standings with a 0-6 record, tying the Letran Lady Knights./PN
