MANILA – Negrense volleybelle Nikha Cabasac is set to join her former high school teammates at the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons women’s volleyball team for college.
The Talisay City, Negros Occidental native formalized her commitment with the Fighting Maroons recently, making her the fourth former Bacolod Tay Tung High School standout in UP’s current roster.
“It is an honor and privilege to be recruited as one of the players for UP. I never imagined that I will be playing in UAAP in the near future. I am grateful for this opportunity,” Cabasac told Panay News on Thursday.
“This is a new experience for me and I understand that the competition level is very tough in UAAP and I am looking forward for the challenges that I will be facing,” she added.
Cabasac further said that having former high school teammates Alyssa Bertolano, Joan Marie Monares and Marianne Sotomil made her adjustment with the Fighting Maroons easier.
“It’s an advantage on my part, because the rapport is already there. What I need to do is to develop my relationship with them so to have an even stronger bond for the team,” Cabasac said.
Cabasac is a worthy addition to newly-named UP head coach Ceseal Delos Santos’ team with her various experience as a member of Thunderbolts team.
With the Thunderbolts, Cabasac was part of the Western Visayas team that competed in Palarong Pambansa, National PRISAA, Rebisco League, Batang Pinoy and Milo Little Olympics.
“I am confident that through the years of training, I am disciplined enough and good at my craft as a utility. I can contribute with my skills, discipline, and pure hard work in order to achieve our goals to win the game,” Cabasac said.
“All of this was made possible because of the support of our dear (Thunderbolts) sports patron Mr. (Jose) Boy Montalbo and Taytung. I will always be forever grateful for this,” she added./PN
