MANILA – Filipino amateur boxer Roden Ladon is up for a huge challenge at the 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships from Aug. 25 to Sept. 3 in Hamburg, Germany.
The Bago City, Negros Occidental-native light flyweight fighter will be one of the two Filipino boxers in the prestigious boxing tournament aside from flyweight Dannel Maamo.
This is the second time Ladon will be competing in the tournament. He won a bronze medal at the AIBA World Boxing Championship two years ago in Doha, Qatar.
“I have prepared hard for this tournament. My goal really is to duplicate, and if ever, surpass my bronze medal finish two years ago,” said Ladon.
He also competed in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics last year.
“I will really be aiming for a podium finish here in AIBA. I am motivated after my forgetful performance in Rio last year,” added the Negrense boxer. “I will really give it all to make the country proud.”
National team head coach Boy Velasco said he sees both Ladon and Maamo performing well after the intense training in Baguio City.
“They’re ready and they will do their best to make the country proud,” Velasco said. “They are seasoned internationalists and they’re used to fighting in the big stage, especially Ladon.”
Ladon and Maamo booked a ticket to the AIBA World Championships after netting bronze medals at the 2017 Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) Asian Elite Championships last May in Tashkent, Uzbekistan./PN
