MANILA – Rain or Shine Elasto Painters continued its rebuilding mode.
It acquired Eduardo Daquioag from Meralco Bolts in exchange for Chris Michael Tolomia in another case of one-on-one trade between two Gilas Pilipinas cadets.
The trade was the second in as many days by the Painters, which has traded Negrense Jeffrei Chan to Phoenix Fuel Masters for Mark Borboran and 2022 second round draft pick.
Daquioag, a former University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers standout, is expected to have a ton on minutes under Painters, whose veterans James Yap, Jericho Cruz and Chris Tiu continue to underperform offensively.
Tolomia, on the other hand, will have to fight for his minutes in a crowded point guard rotation of the Governors’ Cup league-leading Bolts, which has Baser Amer, Simon Atkins and Ilonggo Anjo Caram.
The Daquioag-Tolomia swap was the third time a Gilas Pilipinas cadet member was traded to each other despite earlier pronouncements by the league prohibiting the swap for the next two years.
The PBA, however, changed its tune saying Gilas-to-Gilas trade was allowed and only Blackwater Elite’s rookie Rey Mark Belo, the top-overall pick, will be untouchable for the next two years.
TNT Katropa and NLEX Road Warriors has earlier swapped Roger Pogoy and Alfonso Gotladera for each other, while San Miguel Beermen traded Arnold Van Opstal to Global Port Batang Pier for Von Pessumal.
Another Gilas Cadet-to-Gilas Cadet trade was planned before between Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings’ Kevin Ferrer and Star Hotshots’ Jio Jalalon but did not push through after drawing criticisms from the PBA fans./PN
