MANILA – National University Bulldogs turned to its Negrense netters to sustain its domination in the UAAP men’s badminton as it bags its fourth straight championship at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.
Bulldogs completed another perfect run in Season 80 with a 3-0 win against University of the Philippines Maroons – its 35th straight win overall – in Game 2 of best-of-three finals on Sunday.
Alem Palmares, a native of Cadiz City, Negros Occidental, and Alvin Morada sealed the victory for NU following a 21-17, 21-14 conquest of JM Bernardo and CK Clemente of Maroons in the first doubles.
Bacolodnon Mike Minuluan, on the other hand, scored a come-from-behind 13-21, 21-17, 21-10 win over Bernardo in the first singles before Morada edged Vinci Manuel 21-12, 21-16 in the second singles.
Bulldogs is expected to continue its dominance in men’s badminton next year – no one from the players is graduating and Season 79 MVP Leeward Pedrosa is set to return to the squad.
“Siguro mas kakayanin namin kasi mas malakas kami next year. Tingin namin kaya pa,” said the 20-year old Morada, who was later crowned the Season 80 MVP.
Meanwhile De La Salle University Lady Archers drew victories from its singles players Arianne Rivera, Nicole Albo and Iyah Sevilla to stun women’s title holder University of the Philippines Lady Maroons 3-2.
Lady Archers can claim its fifth title – and its first since 2009 – by ending Lady Maroons’ three-year reign during Game 2 of the best-of-three series on Thursday at the same venue in Malate./PN
