MANILA – Gretchel Soltones is set to reinforce newcomer Iriga Lady Oragons in the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix tournament, which starts Oct. 21 at the San Juan Arena.
Soltones, a former national women’s volleyball team member, will return to the league after helping Bali Pure Water Defenders to its Premier Volleyball League championship recently.
Lady Oragons head coach Parley Tupaz said the former San Sebastian College Lady Stags star will be a great addition to their squad as they aim to keep in step with Superliga powerhouse teams.
“Our team owner, Mayor Madelaine Alfelor-Gazmen, wants us to give other teams a serious fight,” Tupaz said. “We may not win the championship right away but she wants us to keep on fighting regardless of our opponent.”
“That’s why we want to have at least a semifinal finish in the Grand Prix to set the tone for our campaign in the PSL,” he said. “As I’ve said, we may not win right away but we have to come up with at least a very good start.”
Aside from Soltones, also in Lady Oragons are Renelyn Raterta and Grazielle Bombita, and imports Minami Yoshioka of Japan and Tamara Kmezic of Serbia.
“We’re getting imports who are used to competing in club tournaments,” Tupaz said. “They are already practicing with the team. We expect them to hit the ground running and catch up with our preparation.”
Lady Oragons will be one of the nine teams competing in the Grand Prix aside from defending champion Foton Tornadoes, Petron Blaze Spikers, Cignal HD Spikers, F2 Logistics Cargo Movers, Sta. Lucia Lady Realtors, Cocolife Asset Managers, Generika Life Savers, and University of Santo Tomas./PN
