BACOLOD City – Seven illegal drug suspects were killed in police operations in Negros Occidental in line with the government’s intensified campaign against drugs that started in July last year.
The deaths as of December 2016 were a result of “legitimate police operations,” a report from the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office’s (Nocppo) Provincial Drug Enforcement Unit (PDEU) showed.
Chief Inspector Mark Anthony Darroca of the PDEU recently presented statistics on the Nocppo’s antidrug operations in 2016 to the Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Council and the Provincial Peace and Order Council.
A total of 15,835 drug personalities were recorded in the province from July to December last year, PDEU data showed.
They included the 11,657 surrenderees as of December 2016 and the 4,178 drug personalities on Nocppo’s original watch list as of June 2016.
Of those in the original watch list, 2,532 were alleged users while 1,646 were suspected dealers, or pushers. Among the surrenderees, 10,856 were alleged users while 801 were suspected pushers.
None from the 601 barangays in Negros Occidental were seriously drug-affected as of January this year, Nocppo records showed. But 475 were slightly affected and 23 were moderately affected, and 84 were declared “cleared.”
In 2016 the Nocppo staged 565 antidrug operations that resulted in the arrest of 941 suspects and led to the filing of 1,435 cases. In 2015, 645 suspects were arrested in 404 operations, and 843 cases were filed.
Around a month after Oplan Double Barrel was suspended, police are reengaging in the antidrug campaign through Double Barrel Reloaded.
Under the renewed campaign, the Nocppo plans to continue barangay clearing operations, formulate a uniform and strategic barangay defense system on illegal drugs, and continue with organizational cleansing. (PIA/PN)
