BACOLOD City – A grandmother died in one of the two fires that struck this city on Friday.
Marivic Barca, 60, died of heart attack while 16 houses in Purok Calong-calong, Barangay Singcang-Airport were getting burned.
Marites Escabillo and Gloria Conag, meanwhile, suffered minor burns.
Thirteen houses were destroyed while three were damaged. Fire investigators estimated the cost of damage at around P500,000.
The fire started around 12:25 p.m. at the kitchen of Irene Sanz, initial investigation of the Bureau of Fire Protection showed.
City Fire Marshal Rodolfo Denaga said the houses were made of light materials and strong winds caused the blaze to spread easily.
With the fire reaching “third alarm” status, local firefighters sought assistance from fire stations in Bago, Talisay and Silay cities. A “fire out” was declared at 2:05 p.m.
Singcang-Airport barangay captain Rossinie Distrito told the affected residents to evacuate to a nearby chapel.
A few minutes after the Singcang-Airport fire, another one occurred in Barangay Cabug around 2:30 p.m.
Homeowner Kristelyn Gico burned some dried leaves and — thinking the fire was out — swept them to their stockroom, causing it to catch fire, said Fire Officer 3 Raynor Alba, arson investigator.
Firefighters managed to quell the fire in a few minutes. The cost of damage was estimated at P100,000./PN
