BACOLOD City – Local government units (LGUs) in Negros Occidental have started their respective preparations for La Niña.
This weather phenomenon could bring heavy rainfall and flooding, putting residents, especially those living near danger zones, at risk.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) earlier released an advisory that La Niña will start between July, August and September this year.
Irene Bel Ploteña, head of the Provincial Disaster Management Program Division, said they have directed all LGUs in the province to ready their preparedness plans to ensure that disaster response operations will not be hampered in the event of La Niña-related disasters. This includes identifying potential evacuation centers and other necessary measures.
Localized thunderstorms are warning signs of what’s to come, added Ploteña.
In a recent La Niña Watch issued by PAGASA, Negros Occidental residents were advised to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
The state weather bureau said residents are advised to stay informed about weather updates and follow evacuation orders if necessary. (Watchmen Daily Journal)/PN
