AKLAN — A new chapter in the spiritual life of the Diocese of Kalibo began with the episcopal ordination and canonical installation of Cyril Buhayani Villareal, D.D., on April 23, at the Cathedral Parish of St. John the Baptist.
The solemn and historic ceremony formally marked Villareal’s assumption as the fifth bishop of the diocese, ushering in renewed hope and direction for the local Catholic community.
Villareal’s appointment was announced on January 24, 2026, by Pope Leo XIV, drawing enthusiasm and anticipation from the faithful who welcomed the Pope’s choice of a new shepherd for the diocese.
Prior to his elevation to the episcopate, Villareal served as parish priest of Saint Thomas of Villanova in Dao, Capiz, where he earned recognition for his pastoral dedication and strong engagement with the community.
Born in Mambusao, Capiz, in 1974, Villareal is described as a “homegrown Capisnon.” He succeeds Jose Corazon Tala-oc, who retired in June 2025 after years of service to the Diocese of Kalibo.
Clergy, religious, and lay faithful from across Aklan and neighboring areas gathered to witness the rites, which were marked by solemnity and deep reverence. The celebration featured prayers, hymns, and the active participation of priests, parishioners, and community leaders.
The liturgy highlighted key traditions of the Catholic Church, including the laying on of hands—symbolizing the conferral of the Holy Spirit—along with the anointing with sacred chrism and the presentation of episcopal insignia, underscoring the responsibilities entrusted to the new bishop.
The large turnout reflected unity within the diocese and a shared sense of purpose as the faithful welcomed their new spiritual leader.
Villareal is expected to strengthen the Church’s pastoral mission, particularly in extending spiritual support to communities facing social and personal challenges. He is also seen to advance programs focused on faith formation, social justice, and community welfare.
With his background in pastoral care, the new bishop is poised to address the diverse needs of the diocese and foster an inclusive and compassionate Church environment.
