ILOILO – A fresh chapter unfolds in the municipality of Zarraga as newly sworn-in Mayor Jeffrey “Balonglong” Silveo and Vice Mayor Laurence John “LJ” Sortigosa officially assumed their posts following the Ombudsman’s dismissal of former mayor Ma. Jofel Marañon-Soldevilla and Vice Mayor Michael Omar Lacson over grave misconduct tied to a controversial P11.6-million land deal.
The turnover, held on October 22, was officiated by Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr., who expressed full support for the town’s new leadership.
“Zarraga has a strategic position that is essential for our provincial development plans,” Defensor said, assuring residents that the provincial government would help revitalize local governance and foster inclusive growth.
The Ombudsman found Soldevilla and Lacson administratively liable for the purchase of land owned by the late father of Lacson — a conflict of interest under government ethics rules. Both were meted penalties of dismissal from service, forfeiture of retirement benefits, perpetual disqualification from public office, and a bar from taking civil service examinations.
The complaint stemmed from former Sangguniang Bayan member Andre Bon Sumagayasay, who questioned the propriety of the transaction.
Following his oath-taking, Silveo immediately convened department heads and council members to discuss administrative reforms and fill vacant posts left by the dismissed officials.
“We need to implement steps that will elevate the livelihoods of our people. The agricultural sector, in particular, needs our attention for growth,” Silveo said, adding that his administration would prioritize economic revitalization and transparent governance.
Silveo also vowed to cooperate with authorities as they resolve issues related to the land purchase controversy.
“We are prepared to await the Ombudsman’s decision concerning the bought land, which was at the center of the grave misconduct allegations,” he said.
Vice Mayor Sortigosa, meanwhile, echoed calls for unity and active citizen participation.
The new administration urged residents to look forward with optimism, emphasizing that their leadership would “correct past missteps” and guide Zarraga toward stability and progress./PN
