MANILA – Donnie Nietes had a tactical start before pounding Juan Carlos Reveco in the seventh round to retain the IBF world flyweight title on Saturday night at The Forum in Inglewood, California (Sunday in Manila).
It was Nietes’ first successful defense of the belt he won at the expense of the Thai Komgrich Nantapech last April in Cebu City.
As in his previous fights, Nietes – a native of Murcia, Negros Occidental – was very calculated with his punches.
But all of what he launched hurt Reveco while he tightened his defense to bar the Argentine from landing a decent shot.
Nietes started raising his aggression in the sixth round where he landed an overhand right that turned Reveco wobbly.
The Filipino went for the kill in the seventh when he sent Reveco to the canvas for good with body punches.
“Ayaw ko naman na ito na ang maging last fight ko sa HBO kaya sinubukan ko talaga magkaroon ng impressive win,” Nietes said. “Inspired din tayo dahil ang mga kasabay nating lumaban dito ay magagaling na boxers.”
Nietes, 35, improved to 41-1-4 (win-loss-draw), including 23 stoppage victories, while Reveco, 34, dropped to 39-4-0, with 19 stoppage wins.
Meanwhile Filipino-Hawaiian Brian Viloria failed to annex the vacant WBA world flyweight title after a lopsided unanimous-decision defeat to Artem Dalakian.
The Ukrainian was dominant from start to finish with volume punches and dirty tactics. In the 11th round, he opened a huge cut on Viloria’s forehead with a wayward elbow. He won 118-109, 118-109, 118-109.
