Young wrestlers from Aklan went home with nine gold and five silver medals in the recently concluded regional tournament after facing off with Iloilo.
The host province – the only other contending delegation in the sport – won seven gold and nine silver medals.
That they bagged the most gold medals was unexpected, Aklan coach Sannen Tajaran told Panay News in an interview.
“Eight sila [na players] in total. Tatlo ang dating players at lima ang baguhan. But because of determination nila, nagdaog sila,” Tajaran said.
Aklan won five golds and three silvers in cadet and junior girls, and four golds and two silvers in cadet and junior boys during the matches at SM City Iloilo on Jan. 20.
Iloilo, on the other hand, won three golds and five silvers in cadet and junior girls, and four golds and four silvers in cadet and junior boys.
The gold medalists will represent Western Visayas in Palarong Pambansa in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.
Tajaran said his winning players must settle their school requirements first before they start training for Palaro.
In addition, the coach said he will look for a “sponsor” of their training, which he said will focus on “developing their speed and strength.”
A chaperone for Iloilo girl wrestlers, Amy Bacea Belonio, said the young Ilongga fighters had a “fun” time.
“Wrestling is a combative sport that requires energy, endurance and high stamina,” Belonio told Panay News. “Our athletes really focused and showed their passion and determination.”/PN
