MANILA – NLEX Road Warriors’ Asi Taulava and head coach Joseller “Yeng” Guiao are set for a one-on-one meeting to settle the differences between them that led to the former requesting a trade from team management.
The seven-time PBA champion coach said he is scheduled to have a sit-down meeting with Taulava before deciding whether to push through with the requested trade or not.
“You know that every time I have a player who wants to be traded, I respect it and find a way to make them happy,” Guiao told the media during Road Warriors’ practice on Monday.
“I still have to talk to him personally, just to make sure that what we read from the media is accurate with what he feels,” he added. “We have to get it directly from Asi. Then I’ll talk to management based on the result of the meeting with Asi.”
Taulava hogged headlines recently after reportedly requesting Road Warriors management to trade him following a dip in his minutes since Guiao took over the coaching reigns.
“Not one person is bigger than the system. As a coach, you bring a system and philosophy to where you go. I’d like to think I was brought in by NLEX so I can implement my system here,” Guiao said.
“If there are 12 players that can’t fit into your system and only player who can, then it is the system that is the problem,” he added. “But if you have one or two players who can’t fit in, then I don’t think it’s the system that’s the problem.”
In Guiao’s short span of time with the Road Warriors, a number of role players have adapted to his system namely Negrense Raul Soyud, Eric Camson and Jansen Rios, who have all contributed decent numbers despite their 1-5 slate.
“I think it will be unhealthy for Asi and the team if one or the other is not happy with the situation,” Guiao said. “It will be difficult and it will take a longer time, but we would rather do that than keep someone who’s unhappy.”/PN
