ILOILO CITY – The Mamamayang Ayaw sa Anomalya, Mamamayang Ayaw sa Ilegal na Droga (MASA MASID) of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) will no longer give priority to community rehabilitation program.

Under new guidelines, MASA-MASID will focus more on anti-corruption and anti-criminality advocacies, monitor compliance and provide assistance, said DILG Iloilo City director Ferdinand Panes.

In Board Resolution No. 3, the Dangerous Drugs Board transferred community rehabilitation to the Department of Health since the DILG is not trained to handle the program, he explained.

As such, new MASA MASID teams will be created, to be headed by the Punong Barangays (PB) instead of civil society organizations, said Panes.

The strengthening of advocacy will be done through the Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council (BADAC).

Panes said DILG will revitalize the BADACs and see to it that they work efficiently and coordinate with law enforcement agencies.

They will be required to submit reports on monthly accomplishments and barangay clearing operations, as well as a confidential list of drug suspects to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), among others.

Panes said they are waiting for the return of Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, who is on sick leave, to sign an Executive Order on the creation of the steering committee and the technical working group (TWG) for the MASA-MASID.

Meanwhile, a draft of the EO was sent to barangay officials in Iloilo City last week regarding the creation of a new MASA-MASID team until October. (PNA)
