ILOILO City – The Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) is not going to seal the muzzles of its personnel’s service firearms for the New Year celebration.
This would be the second year of the non-taping of gun muzzles. It aims to show that policemen are disciplined enough not to irresponsibly discharge their firearms, said Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, spokesperson of the PRO-6.
In past Christmas and New Year celebrations, the Philippine National Police (PNP) ordered the taping of gun muzzles to supposedly prevent policemen from indiscriminately firing their guns.
But while the non-taping of gun muzzles would continue this year, Gorero said the PRO-6 would continue monitoring its men.
A team would be formed to inspect policemen’s service firearms to know if they have fired their guns during the New Year.
“Those illegally discharging their guns face dismissal from the service,” said Gorero.
December last year, no PRO-6 policeman was caught firing his gun to welcome the New Year, he revealed.
In Metro Manila, PNP’s Director General Ronald Dela Rosa said there was no need to seal the police’s gun muzzles since all cops were required to report on duty during the holidays.
“Paano ka makakaputok kung ikaw ay naka-uniporme at nagdu-duty? Nire-require natin ‘yan, 100 percent, lahat ng kapulisan natin ina-account during Christmas Eve at New Year’s Eve,” he said.
Last year, Director Camilo Pancratius Cascolan, head of the PNP Directorate for Operations, said the non-taping of the gun muzzles aimed to showcase police discipline.
Dela Rosa warned policemen caught indiscriminately firing their guns “would immediately be dismissed from the police service.”
Their immediate superiors would also be punished for command responsibility.
Meanwhile, Gorero said the PRO-6 is aiming for zero cases of deaths and injuries due to stray bullets this holiday season.
The PNP is observing a “one-strike” policy. Provincial and city police directors, chiefs of police and other commanders would be relieved from their posts if they fail to curb or solve cases of deaths and injuries caused by stray bullets within 24 hours.
There were no reported stray bullet incidents in the region on Christmas day and eve, according to Gorero./PN
