MANILA – Filipina tennis sensation Alexandra Eala saw her impressive campaign in the 2026 Indian Wells Masters come to an abrupt end after falling to Czech Republic’s Linda Noskova, 6-2, 6-0, in the Round of 16 of the women’s singles tournament on Tuesday night (Wednesday in the Philippines) in Indian Wells, California.
The defeat stopped Eala’s bid for a deeper run in one of the sport’s most prestigious WTA 1000 events, as Noskova showcased a commanding performance anchored on a powerful serve and aggressive returns to dominate the match from start to finish.
The No. 14-ranked Noskova fired seven aces and won 77 percent of her first-serve points, compared to Eala’s 36 percent success rate on first serve. The Czech player also excelled on her second serve, winning 81 percent of those points while Eala managed 56 percent.
Serving proved decisive in the contest. Noskova captured seven service games and accumulated 30 service points won, while the No. 32-ranked Eala secured only two service games and 18 service points.
Noskova also controlled the baseline exchanges by consistently attacking Eala’s serve. She won 26 receiving points—more than triple Eala’s eight—creating numerous break opportunities.
The Czech converted five of her eight break-point chances, while Eala was unable to capitalize on her lone break opportunity of the match.
In total, Noskova outscored Eala 56-26 in points and 12-2 in games, highlighting the one-sided nature of the encounter. Noskova also strung together a match-high nine consecutive games during the rout, preventing the Filipina from gaining any momentum.
Eala recorded three double faults and did not register an ace in the match.
Despite the setback, the 19-year-old Filipina delivered one of her most notable performances in a WTA 1000 tournament by reaching the Round of 16.
Eala opened her campaign with a hard-fought three-set victory over Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, in the Round of 64, displaying resilience in a tightly contested duel.
She then advanced to the Round of 16 after fourth seed Coco Gauff withdrew via walkover in the Round of 32.
While the loss ended Eala’s Indian Wells campaign, her strong showing reinforced her growing presence on the international stage as one of the Philippines’ rising stars in women’s tennis./PN
