ILOILO City – Not all government agencies and private/public and commercial establishments and institutions in this city have lactation or breastfeeding stations, observed Councilor Candice Tupas, a physician.

Putting up these stations is mandated by Regulation Ordinance No. 2014-526. Tupas pressed for its strict enforcement.

The City Health Office is promoting breastfeeding for babies until six months old. But according to City Health Office chief Dr. Bernardo Caspe, breastfeeding may be difficult for working mothers, thus the ordinance requiring the establishment of lactation or breastfeeding stations.

“So dapat may room (lactating station) gid ang malls or hospitals, etc. pa-breastfeed sang bata,” said Caspe.

But who should monitor the compliance of government agencies and private/public and commercial establishments and institutions?

Under Section 11.1, Article II of Regulation Ordinance No. 2014-526, the city mayor shall organize a multi-sectoral monitoring team that would conduct a regular inspection – at least once every three months.

Caspe said there were “coordinators” monitoring breastfeeding stations but he was unsure how often this was being done./PN
