MANILA – The National University Bulldogs claimed its third straight championship in the UAAP Season 79 men’s badminton tournament following a masterful 3-0 win over thr Ateneo Blue Eagles in Game 2 of the best-of-three finals on Sunday.
Led by MVP Leeward Pedrosa, the Bulldogs completed a three-peat and its fourth championship overall in the last five seasons. The Bulldogs also stretched its unbeaten run to 27 matches dating back to 2014.
The Bulldogs dominated the singles matches with Pedrosa beating Rookie of the Year awardee Keoni Asuncion, 21-13, 21-10, and Keeyan Gabuelo sweeping Carlo Remo, 21-18, 21-17.
The Bulldogs finished off their dominant season with the doubles pair of Mike Minuluan and Alem Palmares scoring a 21-17, 21-19 win over Hanz Bernardo and Jan Mangubat.
Meanwhile, the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons also accomplished a three-peat in the women’s division, as it subdued the Ateneo Lady Eagles in the finals decider, 3-1.
Bouncing back big from a series-opening loss that ended a 25-tie winning streak since two years ago, the Lady Maroons responded in the do-or-die game of the race-to-three series to reclaim the women’s trophy.
The Lady Eagles drew first blood with Bianca Carlos defeating Bea Bernardo, 21-16, 21-18, in a battle of former league MVPs in the first singles. But the Lady Maroons won the second singles and swept the two doubles matches to prevail.
Gelita Castillo bested Cassy Ramos, 21-13, 24-22, Poca Alcala and Jessie Francisco turned back Ramos and Trixie Malibiran, 21-15, 21-17, while Castilo and Lea Inlayo edged Geva de Vera and Carlos, 21-23, 21-12, 21-12, to complete the title feat./PN
