ILOILO City – “Octopus” electrical connections are the leading cause of fire in the city, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Region 6.

An “octopus” connection involves several extensions plugged in an outlet, said Inspector Lorna Parcellano of the BFP-6. She warned the public to stop this practice as this may overload the circuit and trigger fire.

Around 150 fires occurred in the city in 2016, and 57 of them (38 percent) pointed to “octopus” connections as cause, the BFP-6 data showed.

Other top common causes of fire here are open flames due to unattended cooking, lighted matches or lighter, unattended lighted candle, and lighted cigarette butts.

But there was a “significant decrease” in the damage caused by fires, the BFP-6 said.

Fires in 2016 left some P33,146,096 worth of damage — way below than the P93,385,100 in 2015 — said the agency.

Parcellano attributed this to their relentless campaign on fire safety and awareness, and community participation to their program that educates the public on basic fire prevention and suppression techniques.

“Schools, hospitals and establishments regularly conduct and actively participate in fire drills,” she said.

Meanwhile Parcellano advised the public to make sure their electrical wirings are regularly checked by an electrician. Neglected or overlooked wires pose danger, too, she said. (PIA/PN)
