SAN JOSE, Antique – Organizers of the Ten Outstanding Pupils and Students (TOPS) of Antique, Inc. will recognize the Antiqueña who topped the 2014 Bar exams.
Atty. Irene Mae B. Alcobilla, a native of San Remigio town, will be conferred the “Dungganon nga Antiqueño” award.
Alcobilla will be cited for her inspiring feat in academic excellence, said Dr. Egidio P. Elio, chairman emeritus of the TOPS Antique, Inc.
The award will be given to the lawyer in a ceremony on Feb. 25 at the Antique National School — the same day and venue for the awarding of the pupils and students who made it to the TOPS.
Alcobilla, who took Law at San Beda College, was a typhoon “Frank” survivor.
She was a graduating political science student at West Visayas State University in Iloilo City in 2008 when “Frank” washed out their home. Her mother did not survive.
In the 2014 Bar exams, she posted a rating of 85.5. She topped the 1,126 passers out of the 5,984 takers.
In San Remigio, Alcobilla graduated valedictorian from St. Vincent’s High School.
She trained at the Office of the Solicitor General before taking the Bar. She had said she only wanted to be a Bedan lawyer and her topping the Bar was a “miracle” and a surprise. She described the exams as “very, very hard.”
“I did not expect to top it kasi hindi talaga ako nakatulog noong time ng exam,” she said in March 2015, when the results were released.
“I just knew (of the Bar results) when people started tagging me on Facebook. I can’t explain my happiness. Hindi po talaga ako makapaniwala,” she added. (With Philippine News Agency/PN)
