MANILA – Paolo Duterte has resigned as vice mayor of Davao City but it was not yet final, according to sister Sara, the city mayor.
Paolo’s resignation letter has been submitted to Malacañang but “nothing will be final until the resignation is accepted by the President,” said Sara, daughter of President Rodrigo Duterte.
Paolo resigned on Christmas Day, citing “recent unfortunate events in my life that are closely tied to my failed first marriage” as reason.
“These, among others, include the maligning of my reputation in the recent name-dropping incident in the Bureau of Customs smuggling case and the very public squabble with my daughter,” he said. “The other person in this failed relationship is incorrigible and cannot be controlled and I take responsibility for all that has happened as a result of a wrong decision to marry at a very young age.”
Paolo had also publicly feuded with 17-year-old daughter Isabelle.
According to Sara, her brother was not closing his doors on public service.
“I look forward to the day he can serve our country again. I don’t think he is closing his doors on running again,” she said in a press briefing on Wednesday.
No one expected Paolo to resign even as he had been talking about leaving public office after his name was tagged in alleged corruption at the Bureau of Customs, she said.
Earlier President Duterte disclosed that he urged Paolo to “just do what’s right” before the latter announced his resignation.
“You are in a position to do what is right,” said the President. “Kung ano lang ang tama sa iyo, gawin mo.” But the chief executive clarified that he did not suggest that his son resign. (ABS-CBN News)
