BAROTAC Nuevo National Comprehensive High School (BNNCHS) and Jaro-Central Philippine University won titles in the Mariano C. Araneta Sr. Memorial Invitational Football Cup in Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo.
BNNCHS dominated the open category with a 5-4 shootout victory over Iloilo State College of Fisheries-Barotac Nuevo (ISCOF-BN) in a tightly contested finale on Dec. 24 at the Barotac Nuevo Football Field.
BNNCHS gained the early lead with a hit from John Bernard Delariarte in the third minute but ISCOF-BN was quick to knot the score at 1-1 with a conversion from Jomar Lestingio in the 75th minute.
ISCOF-BN snatched the lead eight minutes later on a hit by Jhenver Vergara but BNNCHS responded with a goal from Johnny Toledo to force a shootout. In the shootout, BNNCHS scored all of its five attempts while ISCOF-BN managed only four.
Delariarte was later adjudged the open category Most Valuable Player (MVP). Teammates Toledo, Nathaniel Boblo and Jefferson Descarial were awarded Best Striker, Best Midfielder and Best Defender, respectively. ISCOF-BN’s John Kent Delariarte was the Best Goalkeeper.
Jaro-CPU, meanwhile, ruled the Under-13 category following a 5-4 shootout win over Tamasak Kickers. Jaro-CPU got the early lead on a hit by Dugong Montilla in the 10th minute but Tamasak scored via Francis Botavara to force a shootout.
Montilla was named U-13 MVP while teammates Johann Mitchel Javellana and Jonlee Dile were recognized as Best Midfielder and Best Defender, respectively. Tamasak’s Mark Gedaya was the Best Goalkeeper.
Organized by the Barotac Nuevo Football Club, the tournament backed by Mariano Araneta Sr. has drawn eight teams in the U-13 and six in the open categories./PN
