MANILA – Filipino Eduard Folayang failed to defend his ONE Championship lightweight belt after Vietnamese Martin Nguyen knocked him out in the second round of “Legends of the World” at SM Mall of Asia Arena.
Nguyen made history after the Friday night bout in Pasay City as he became the first two-division ONE Championship world champion. He won the featherweight crown by defeating Marat Gufurov in August.
Folayang was aggressive at the start as he unloaded numerous kicks on Nguyen. The Filipino almost sent the Vietnamese to the floor with a leg kick but missed.
Early in the second round, Folayang continued to pounce on Nguyen but the latter unloaded a cracking right straight that knocked down the former. Nguyen capped off the stoppage with hammer fists.
“I think coming into the fight, the main objective was the TKO,” Nguyen said. “Hats off to Eduard (Folayang). He showed relentlessness tonight. I hope that he is all right and he comes back strong.”
Nguyen, who also won his last six matches, improved his record to 10-1-0. The 33-year-old Folayang’s slate dropped to 18-6.
Another Filipino failed to snatch a ONE FC flyweight championship. Danny Kingad suffered from a first-round submission defeat to Brazilian Adriano Moraes.
In other matches, Joshua Pacio halted fellow Filipino Roy Doliguez, Filipina Gina Iniong stopped Priscilla Gumbal Gaol of Indonesia in two rounds, and Filipino Kevin Belingon beats Kevin Chung of South Korea via decision./PN
