SAN JOSE, Antique – A total of 17,685 dogs across the province have been vaccinated against rabies, the Provincial Veterinary Office (ProVet) said.
Vaccinated from Jan. 1 to Dec. 13, the dogs constituted only 32.6 percent of the ProVet’s 38,000 target dogs this year.
Porferio Gallego Jr., supervising agriculturist for the ProVet, attributed the low turnout to the lack of vaccines and vaccinators in the towns.
Gallego also appealed to the local governments to help enforce the “provincial dog ordinance.”
If not for the two fatalities due to rabies earlier this year — in barangays Pis-anan, Sibalom and Cadolonan, San Remigio — Antique would have been certified rabies-free, he said.
To promote responsible dog ownership, capitol will hold a dog show on Dec. 20 at the Evelio B. Javier Freedom Park.
Local dog owners were encouraged to join the show, one of the many activities in line with the Binirayan Festival. Participating dogs will be judged based on breed and tricks. (PNA)
