BACOLOD City – Only “qualified” informal settlers at the old slaughterhouse may avail themselves of relocation services from the city government.
“Not all of them are qualified,” City Legal Officer Joselito Bayatan disclosed.
The City Legal Office (CLO) had sent 76 families occupying the old slaughterhouse a Notice to Vacate.
City hall plans to convert the site into a meat processing center.
Bayatan said the Bacolod Housing Authority (BHA) and the CLO were currently evaluating the affected families.
That they were occupying the old slaughterhouse site was “a very clear case of illegal occupation of a government property,” he said.
Some of them were not real owners of structures at the site, while others were not residents of the city, said Bayatan.
Aside from putting up a meat processing center, the city government also plans to develop the old slaughterhouse site to provide “Lechonan Country” traders improved and sanitary roasting facilities.
A Sangguniang Panlungsod resolution tasked the City Administrator’s Office to create a committee that will study plans for the old slaughterhouse.
Councilor Bartolome Orola, author of the resolution, said converting the site into a meat processing center may provide alternative livelihood to not only Barangay 35 residents but other locals as well.
But informal settlers and the dog compound must be removed and the nearby river must be cleaned first, Orola had said./PN
