ILOILO City – Oton and Santa Barbara teams pulled off close victories at the start of the men’s basketball action of the 2017 Biron Cup Inter-municipality Invitational over the weekend here.
The Oton squad banked on the hot three-point shooting of Juvy Faeldan to score a 68-60 victory over the San Miguel team in front of its supporters at the Oton Gym on Sunday.
Oton had the control of the match from the start behind Faeldan, who buried five three-pointers in the game. San Miguel made its run in the third to close the gap behind Jemuel Malojo and Lord Soliguen.
But Oton regained its shooting touch in the final quarter, with veteran playmaker Aming Doligues and Noel Abilo draining outside shots to preserve their win.
Meanwhile the Santa Barbara squad tied Oton on top of Bracket B with a 1-0 win-loss slate after scoring a stunning 73-66 victory.
Over at the Ponong Gym in Passi City, the component city squad came out with a 77-66 win over Carles.
In the opening day games on Saturday at the Barotac Nuevo gym, San Enrique scored a 62-58 win over Banate, while Barotac Nuevo edged Anilao, 78-67. San Enrique, Barotac Nuevo and Passi were tied at Bracket C with a 1-0 record.
In the volleyball action at the Dumangas covered gym, the Dumangas men’s team swept Barotac Viejo, 25-16, 25-13, while the Dumangas women’s team defeated Barotac Viejo, 25-22, 25-22./PN
